Most of us have heard of plaque, but what exactly is it?
Plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria and sugars that forms on our teeth. Plaque can lead to decay and gum disease, which is why brushing and flossing your teeth is so important. Luckily, plaque can be removed by a cleaning from your dentist, and daily brushing and flossing.
If plaque builds-up it will form tartar, which is not as easily removed from the mouth. Tartar gets underneath your gums and cannot be removed by simply brushing and flossing. Instead, your dentist will need to perform a scaling and root planing procedure. This procedure involves your dentist cleaning underneath the gums in order to remove the harmful bacteria and tartar.
Some easy ways to avoid dental health problems caused by plaque include:
• Try avoiding sugary, sticky and starchy foods
• Brush two times per day
• Floss each day
• See your dentist regularly for cleanings and dental exams
