During our last article, our team listed several drinks that will cause damage to your oral health, and may eventually lead to more serious overall health issues. To continue our blog series on your dietary choices, and what will benefit and what will harm your oral health, the team at Milford Dental Excellence will review several foods that will cause damage to your oral health.
Citrus Fruits
Citrus fruits are fruits that are produced by citrus trees or plants. Citrus fruits include lemons, oranges, grapefruit and more. What makes citrus fruits troublesome for your teeth is the high acid content that will wear away your enamel and cause cavities to form.
Chewy Candy
Foods, mainly candies, that are excessively chewy have a tendency to get stuck in your teeth. In addition to being stuck in your teeth, these foods contain a lot of sugar that can cause cavities to develop.
Foods that contain starch
One of the most popular foods that contain starch is the potato chip. Like chewy/sticky candies, foods that contain starch will get suck in your teeth and feed the bacteria that results in plaque and tartar. When this bacteria begins to produce more plaque and bacteria, you may experience an increase in tooth decay.
Hard Candy
Hard candies are probably the worst type of food or snack you can have for your oral health. While being eaten, these candies sit in your mouth for long periods of time as they are “melting.” As these candies sit in your mouth, they release syrups and sugars over a long period of time that attack your teeth. In addition to an increase in cavities, hard candies can cause dental emergencies if you bite into them.
While we know you cannot completely avoid these foods, we recommend minimizing how often you are consuming them. In addition to limiting your intake, you should always try to brush your teeth, use a mouth rinse and floss after you eat these certain foods.
