Do I Have Dental Allergies? – Part 1

Haven’t been to the dentists in a while? Ever joke and say it is because you’re allergic to dentistry? Dental allergies are an issue that many patients experience when visiting their dentists. These allergies are mostly caused by materials that dentists use in their offices such as latex. If you have a dental history with allergies or ever experience any of the ones listed below, please inform your dentist.

Can I Have a Latex Allergy?

Unfavorable reactions to latex are triggered by particular proteins in the latex product. In reaction to these proteins, the body responds defensively to get rid of the foreign substance. Then antibodies are sent by the immune system to fight off the proteins. Certain chemicals such as histamine and others go into the circulatory system, which is what provokes an allergic reaction.

Signs a latex allergic reaction is happening are:

  • Scratchy throat
  • Hives
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy, red skin and/or eyes

This is a minor reaction to latex. When a patient experiences more extreme symptoms, it is termed anaphylaxis. The symptoms of anaphylaxis happen quickly and could be deadly. Go to the emergency room if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Irregular pulse
  • Unsteadiness
  • Confusion
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Nausea
