Can the Dentist Treat Headaches?

Headaches are unfortunately a common issue many people experience.

There are many things that can cause headaches, including:

  • Grinding/clenching your teeth
  • Hormones
  • Abnormal Growths
  • Improper muscle function
  • Signals from your brain

Many people will go to the drug store and pick-up medicine or go to their personal care physicians, but did you know that your dentist may be able to help?

Yes, that’s right, your dentist!

Many dentists are trained in treating TMJ issues and how to alleviate headaches. If you do suffer from headaches and have not been able to find relief, a trip to the dentist may be able to do you some good.

Many headaches are a result of spasms in your jaw muscles or neck, or sometimes from grinding/clenching your jaw and teeth. When this is the case, a dentist will be able to create a specialty mouthguard that you can wear at night that can offer you some relief. The mouthguard will give your jaw place to rest while you are sleeping. This will keep your muscles from spasming, your jaw from clenching, and protect your teeth from grinding. The act of clenching or grinding your teeth is a condition called bruxism. People who suffer from bruxism tend to develop tension headaches.

If you do experience frequent headaches, it is important to consult with your personal care physician. If they are unable to help you alleviate the headaches, you may want to set an appointment with your dentist.
