Why Are You Supposed to Brush Your Tongue?

If you are concerned about bad breath, you should brush your tongue.

Dental issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, and gingivitis are caused by germs that live in groups. When these groups are broken up by brushing and flossing, they’re much less destructive to your teeth. Another issue that may come from these groups of bacteria includes foul odors.

When your tongue is left unclean, these germs can begin to create a foul odor from your mouth. By brushing your tongue, you are actively removing these germs from your mouth. You may also want to use a tongue scraper that can help treat halitosis or chronic bad breath. One of the best times to brush and clean your tongue is when you wake up in the morning.

Some general brushing tips:

  • Tilt the brush at a 45-degree angle against the gum line and sweep or roll the brush away from the gum line.
  • Gently brush the outside, inside, and chewing surface of each tooth using short back-and-forth strokes.
  • Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

Bad breath may be a sign of other dental issues, so it is important to address your concerns as soon as possible.

If you practice good dental hygiene and brush your tongue, but bad breath continues, be sure to schedule an appointment with Milford Dental Excellence.
